Types of Checkouts on Shopify

Hey there πŸ‘‹

Checkout is the last stop before turning visitors into customers, and choosing the right checkout on Shopify is key.

Fun fact: the use of checkouts, when wielded strategically, can elevate conversion rates by as much as 50% compared to the straightforward guest checkout. This isn't just about processing transactions; it's about creating an experience that transforms casual visitors into loyal customers.

Statistics speak volumes, underlining Shopify's process in the conversion game.

Pre-2023 Classic Checkouts

  • Customization: Shopify's checkout offered limited customization options, like colors and fonts. Shopify Plus could modify the checkout process more deeply, including the layout and functionality.

  • It included essential features like shipping and payment information, order summary, and customer information fields. Standard checkout was designed to be straightforward and user-friendly.

In both cases, the goal was to provide a seamless and secure checkout experience for customers, but Shopify Plus offered more flexibility and advanced features tailored to larger businesses or those with unique requirements. These classic checkout experiences set the foundation for Shopify's continuous evolution in offering enhanced e-commerce solutions.

New Checkout Updates in 2023: Unveiling Shopify's Shopping Revolution! πŸ›οΈπŸš€

Example of the Shopify one-page checkout

Imagine a checkout process so seamless that it feels like a natural extension of the customer's journey. That's precisely what Shopify's new updates aim to achieve. From enhanced user interfaces to optimized workflows, these features are designed to minimize friction and maximize efficiency, adding up to 1.5% of the conversion rates.

One notable addition is the introduction of a dynamic One-Page Checkout. This streamlined approach condenses the entire purchasing journey into a single, user-friendly page. Customers can breeze through the process, reducing the likelihood of drop-offs and boosting the overall conversion rate.

Moreover, the new updates introduce customizable checkout fields, allowing merchants to tailor the information collection process to their specific needs. This flexibility not only enhances user satisfaction but also empowers businesses to gather relevant data for personalized marketing strategies.

But the evolution doesn't stop there. Advanced security measures have been integrated to instill confidence in every transaction. With increased trust, customers are more likely to complete their purchases, contributing to a positive impact on conversion rates.

The platform continues to provide its users with tools that not only keep pace with industry trends but also anticipate and exceed customer expectations.

Unlocking Shopify Checkout Hacks: Elevate Your eCommerce Game! πŸ›οΈ

πŸ’‘ No comprehensive guide is complete without a bonus round. Here, we share pro tips to supercharge your Shopify checkout strategy. From minimizing cart abandonment to building trust, these hacks are your secret weapons to optimizing the checkout experience.

Tip #1 – Add Your Business Logo

Elevate your Shopify checkout experience effortlessly by replacing the default store name text with your custom logo. This small yet impactful change establishes trust and seamlessly integrates your checkout into your storefront.

Follow these steps to make it happen:

  1. Go to your store admin > Online Store > Themes, and select Customize your live theme

  2. In the left-bottom corner, click on Theme settings and choose CHECKOUT

  3. Find Logo section and click on Select image, upload your business logo and confirm by clicking on Select

  4. Review the visual appearance ensuring a polished appearance on both desktop and mobile views, then seal the deal by clicking Save

Tip #2 – Change Texts in the Checkout

People often think that you can't change any texts in the Shopify Checkout unless you use Shopify Plus. Here's the good news – you can actually change most of them pretty easily without it.

  1. Go to your store admin > Online Store > Themes, click on Actions for your live theme, and select Edit languages

  2. In the top navigation, choose Checkout & system, and there you go, you can edit all the texts you see, including buttons, links, footer, navigation, etc.

  3. Once done, click on Save and review your change on the live site

You can unleash your creativity and change the wording to increase the trust and motivate customers throughout the entire checkout journey. For example, transform the default "Pay now" button, which might be a bit aggressive, into a more inviting "Complete order". Elevate the reassurance by adding a lock emoji πŸ”’ to underscore the sense of security.  This simple change can increase customer trust and encourage them to finalize their purchase.

Tip #3 – Show Contact Information or Integrate a Chat

Displaying contact information during the checkout may help to increase the conversion rate. First of all, it builds trust through visible contact information – a simple phone number reassures customers they have support if needed.

Consider a subtle addition, like adding a small text saying, "Need help? Call us at X". You can edit it via changing theme texts (see tip #2), but the more elegant way is adjusting your logo image (see tip #1) and adding other information. For a seamless integration, explore font, color, and text positioning tweaks to make this information appear native and unobtrusive within the checkout.

πŸ’‘ Even a better way than displaying contact information is embedding an online chat widget. You likely don't need it on the storefront, but we recommend having it in the checkout (and cart page). Those potential customers are ready to make a purchase and providing real-time assistance can be the difference-maker.

Unfortunately, that's possible only on Shopify Plus, as you need to add a custom javascript to your checkout page. Even Shopify Inbox chat doesn't work there.

Tip #4 – Enable Express Checkout Payments

Supercharge your checkout experience with Express Payments, also known as accelerated checkout. This feature allows your customers to skip the default checkout process and pay for the order using one of the support methods. The result? Significantly reduced friction, leading to higher conversion rates.

To enable express checkout in your Shopify store, make sure you’re using Shopify Payments or Stripe.

  1. Go to your store admin > Settings > Payments

  2. Click on the Manage link for your card payment provider (typically Shopify Payments or Stripe)

  3. Add desired payment providers in the Wallets section and click on Save

The "payment buttons" can also be displayed on your product pages or your cart page. The payment methods supporting accelerated checkout are:

  • Apple Pay

  • Google Pay

  • Amazon Pay

  • PayPal

  • Shop Pay

For example, with Shop Pay, the numbers speak volumes – test has proven a massive 72% increase in the conversion rate compared to the standard checkout. The point is that accelerated checkouts will always have a much higher conversion, yet it's surprising that the majority of shoppers haven't fully embraced them...yet. The potential is undeniable.

Tip #5 – Enable Checkout Abandonment Emails

Nearly 70% of customers tend to exit the checkout before they complete a purchase. Shopify simplifies this recovery approach with automatic email notifications.

If a customer leaves the email but doesn't complete the checkout, the platform seamlessly triggers an email, effortlessly re-engaging them. These notifications are a native part of the Shopify platform, and it's super easy to enable them to effortlessly win back those lost opportunities.

  1. Go to your store admin > Marketing > Automations

  2. Click on Create automation and select Abandoned checkout

  3. Customize the workflow settings and email

  4. Confirm by clicking on Save

There are also plenty of options regarding who and when to send the email. We definitely recommend sending it to anyone who abandons checkout after 1 hour. Basically, the sooner the email will be sent, the higher the chance to recover the customer is. You can expect to recover between 5 to 10% of the orders. Sending the email the next day really doesn't make much sense.
